Russell Henley Dominates Tour Championship Opening Round with Scheffler Close Behind
Russell Henley leads the Tour Championship after a stellar first round, with Scottie Scheffler hot on his heels in Atlanta.

Russell Henley made a remarkable start to the Tour Championship in Atlanta, shooting a nine-under-par 61 to secure a two-stroke lead after the first round. The 36-year-old American, who has already secured his spot in the United States' Ryder Cup team, showcased his putting prowess with 207 feet of putts, including seven birdies and an eagle, all while maintaining a bogey-free round.
However, the competition is fierce. Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, is just two strokes behind Henley after carding a seven-under 63. Scheffler, aiming to become the first player to defend a FedEx Cup title, demonstrated his resilience with birdies on the 15th, 17th, and 18th holes. His scrambling par on the 16th was equally crucial in keeping him in contention.
Other notable performances include Robert MacIntyre of Scotland and Tommy Fleetwood of England, both sitting at six under par. Two-time major winners Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas, along with Patrick Cantlay, are also within striking distance, three shots behind Henley.
Rory McIlroy, the world number two, had a mixed round. After reaching three under at the turn, he lost momentum on the back nine but managed to finish with a four-under 66, thanks to a fortunate birdie on the 18th. His wedge shot from the greenside bunker on the par-five hole hit the stand and bounced back onto the green, leaving him with a 17-foot putt for birdie.
With 22 of the 30 players finishing under par, the competition is heating up. The course, softened by recent heavy rain, played under preferred lies rules, allowing players to lift, clean, and place their balls in favorable positions. More inclement weather is forecasted for Friday, prompting organizers to move the second-round tee times to 08:00 local time (13:00 BST).
