Thrilling Comebacks: Zverev and Medvedev Overcome Adversity to Advance in Halle Open

Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev showcased resilience at the Halle Open, overcoming illness and a nosebleed to secure victories and advance in the tournament.

Alexander Zverev's Gritty Performance

World number three Alexander Zverev demonstrated remarkable resilience at the Halle Open, overcoming a sudden illness to defeat Italy's Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). In the second game of his quarter-final match, Zverev abruptly left the court to vomit, visibly unwell upon his return. Despite initial struggles in longer rallies, the 28-year-old German managed to regain his composure and secure the win.

"I felt fine before the match. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, I felt really, really bad. I felt ill, went to throw up and then 15 minutes later I felt OK again," Zverev recounted. "I don't know what it was, I've never experienced that before. I hope I'll be fine in the next couple of hours when the adrenaline settles."

Daniil Medvedev's Steady Progress

In the semi-finals, Zverev will face Daniil Medvedev, who also faced his own challenges during his match. Medvedev's game was briefly delayed when he experienced a nosebleed on court. Despite this, the former world number one maintained his focus and cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over American Alex Michelsen. With just 10 days remaining until Wimbledon, Medvedev's performance keeps his preparations on track.

"The shadows on the court made the conditions quite difficult. It took some time to get used to it," Medvedev, 29, explained.

Sabalenka's Dramatic Victory in Berlin

Meanwhile, at the Berlin Open, world number one Aryna Sabalenka showcased her fighting spirit by saving four match points to defeat Elena Rybakina 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). Down 6-2 in the deciding tie-break, Sabalenka's comeback was sparked by a fortunate net cord, leading her to win the next five points and secure her place in the semi-finals.

"It's amazing to win matches like this, it trains your fighting spirit for the next tournaments and I'm proud of myself for trying till the very last point," Sabalenka said.

The 27-year-old will now face another former Wimbledon champion, Czech Marketa Vondrousova, who defeated Tunisian Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-1 in a re-match of their 2023 final at the All England Club.
