The Milwaukee Brewers' Winning Formula: How a $115 Million Team Dominates MLB

Discover how the Milwaukee Brewers, with one of MLB's smallest payrolls, built a $115 million juggernaut through team culture, innovative strategies, and a unique 'Check Game'.

The Milwaukee Brewers' Winning Formula: How a $115 Million Team Dominates MLB

As the Milwaukee Brewers continue to pile up wins at an unprecedented pace in MLB, many are left wondering: What’s their secret? With one of the smallest payrolls in the league, the Brewers have managed to outplay teams with significantly higher budgets. The answer lies in their unique team culture, innovative strategies, and a game they call the 'Check Game.'

The 'Check Game': Fostering Team Unity

The 'Check Game' is a simple yet powerful concept that has become a cornerstone of the Brewers' success. If a player talks about their own accolades, defends themselves, or passes blame to someone else, they receive a 'check.' The game, which started in the coach's room, is designed to remind everyone that the team comes first.

"It’s not about us. It’s about the team," says Brewers manager Pat Murphy. "Anyone is fair game." Even owner Mark Attanasio isn’t off-limits. The game exemplifies the organization’s concerted effort to align different departments and ensure every voice is heard and valued.

Milwaukee Community College: A Collegiate Atmosphere

The Brewers' clubhouse feels more like a college locker room than a professional baseball team. Murphy, who spent 22 years coaching at the collegiate level, refers to his first- and second-year players as 'freshmen' and 'sophomores.' This approach has created a unique environment where players focus on fundamentals, baserunning, and the little details of the game.

"We joke around and say it’s Milwaukee Community College," says Christian Yelich. "That’s how we play the game, and that’s the kind of guys we have."

Matt Arnold’s Vision: Building a Connected Team

General Manager Matt Arnold has been instrumental in the Brewers' success. He emphasizes the importance of connecting different departments within the organization, from analytics to player development. "Connectivity is the biggest thing," Arnold explains. "We’re all working to make each other better, not against each other."

The Brewers’ Brand of Baseball: Speed, Defense, and Situational Awareness

The Brewers have leaned into MLB’s new rules, emphasizing speed and defense. They rank second in stolen bases and lead the majors in outs above average over the past three seasons. This style of play doesn’t require a high payroll, but it does require a commitment to doing the little things right.

"We don’t try to do too much," says Freddy Peralta. "We focus on the little things."

Looking Ahead: Can the Brewers Win a Ring?

With September approaching, the Brewers are on pace for 101 victories, which would surpass the franchise record. However, the ultimate question remains: Can this style of play win a World Series? The Brewers believe their multiple double-digit winning streaks this season have provided a blueprint for postseason success.

"We play the whole game, create as much havoc and pressure as we can, and see what happens," says Yelich. "Assuming we get there, we could win the whole thing or be bounced in the first round. That’s the sport."
