New Orleans Saints QB Battle Heats Up: Shough, Rattler, and Haener Vie for Starting Role

The New Orleans Saints' quarterback competition intensifies as Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener battle for the starting role in training camp.

The New Orleans Saints have entered their first week of training camp, and the quarterback competition is already heating up. With three promising candidates—Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Jake Haener—vying for the starting role, the team is taking a measured approach to determine who will lead the offense in the upcoming season.

A Deliberate Process

Saints coach Kellen Moore has made it clear that he won't rush the decision. The plan is to rotate the top three quarterbacks through the first-team offense until the preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on August 10. "We'll make adjustments after the first preseason game and go from there," Moore said.

Early Camp Observations

Through six practices, Shough, Rattler, and Haener have each had their moments with the first-team offense. Shough and Rattler each spent two days leading the first-team unit in the first week. The coaching staff is paying close attention to how each quarterback handles mistakes and operates the offense.

  • Spencer Rattler bounced back from an interception on Day 2 with a touchdown throw to Juwan Johnson and a rushing touchdown in 11-on-11 drills.
  • Tyler Shough had an extended look during the first full-pads practice, showcasing his ability to make quick decisions and communicate effectively.
  • Jake Haener, working with the third team, has had fewer reps but has shown promise with his arm strength and composure.

What the Coaches Are Looking For

The coaching staff is evaluating more than just on-field performance. They want to see how each quarterback communicates, handles pressure, and leads the team. "How smooth is it? Can we get in and out of the huddle? That's the biggest part," Rattler said.

The Road Ahead

The Saints have seven more practices, a potential scrimmage, and four quarters of a preseason game before they start narrowing their options. Moore is prepared to let the competition play out as long as necessary. "If it goes all the way to the end, it goes all the way to the end," he said.

Player Perspectives

Veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks praised all three quarterbacks for their professionalism and focus. "They're approaching the situation at a high level," Cooks said. Shough, in particular, has impressed with his ability to block out external expectations and play with confidence.

Other Camp Highlights

  • Kicking Battle: Blake Grupe and Charlie Smyth are competing for the kicking role. Grupe has been consistent, while Smyth has shown potential with long-range kicks.
  • Offensive Line: The first-team offensive line remains unchanged, with rookie Kelvin Banks Jr. at left tackle and Taliese Fuaga back at his natural right tackle position.

As the Saints continue their training camp, the quarterback competition remains the focal point. With each practice, the stakes get higher, and the decision becomes more critical for the team's success in the upcoming season.
